My grandfather who was from North Korea used to eat icy mool nengmyun during snowing winter seasons. After eating, he will go to his room and cover himself in a blanket.

You know, I've heard that in some books. Yet in more recent books and articles it looks like the conventional wisdom is changing. I'd blame that on the introduction of refrigeration.

In Korean, there is an expression "Eeh-yoel-chee-yoel" meaning you bit the heat with heat; during the summer hot food was encouraged. The opposite is also true. Very cold cinnamon drink (Sujoengwa) or almost frozen watery kimchi is a delight during the winter. Sounds odd but imagine yourself in very hot Ondolbang in dry Korean winter, a sip of cold Nangmyoen broth or watery kimchi is very refreshing.

Kev and I had our last bowl of Naengmyeon on Friday. It was sad. However, as others have pointed out, naengmyeon is also a winter food. But how would one opperate chopsticks with mittens?

I LOVE naengmyeon...it's truly a "chilling" experience. I'm still going to eat it in the winter it's so refreshing. There's this 2900w restaurant near our work, everything on the menu is 2900w. Their naengmyeon is da bomb...word!

In the winter time, I mean. It's supposedly not JUST a North Korean thing, but I think North Koreans eat a lot of naengmyeon in the winter time. So we kids would stare at her. What with the ssamgaetang in the summer, Koreans, man. (Found your page when I googled for a recipe for acorn jelly salad. Having a hankering for some.)

North Koreans like to eat naengmyeon in the winter, so my mom, whose parents are basically North Korean, would randomly be like "NAENGMYEON TIME~" and my dad would sort of snicker and go "Ah, my North Korean wife."
