Bourdain’s Blogging

Michael Ruhlman started his blog a few months ago. He’s a notorious partner in crime with Anthony Bourdain. This year, he has let Bourdain guest blog twice, once on season two of Bravo’s Top Chef and then on the hell that is Food Network. The second one really caused some heated chatter.

Ruhlman’s now handed Tony the keys to his blog. This means that Tony can post on Ruhlman’s blog whenever he wants now. And he started right off by getting in the middle of the battle between Frank Bruni (New York Times food critic) and Jeffrey Chodorow (Restaurateur who brought such “classics” as Rocco’s and a restaurant called Caviar and Banana).

It seems that after giving Chodorow’s latest steakhouse zero stars, Bruni then gave a decent review to a steakhouse in the Penthouse Executive Club. Says Tony:

Maybe I’m being cynical here but the Message seems to be: “Even a freakin’ strip club–where you get lap dances offered between courses is better than your soulless, overpriced meat-emporium. I’d rather spend time in a hot tub with Bob Guiccione than you!”

I love it when Tony writes.

    Hey,

I’ve been meaning to email you about the ads I’ve been seeing for his TV show, Without Reservations, on the Discovery: Food and Living network (not sure if I’ve got the name right.)

This week’s episode (airing tonight) features Tony in Korea doing the whole san nakji thing and stuff. Any one get that channel here? Is it even available?

I have all episodes of “No Reservations” and his old Food Network show “A Cook’s Tour.” The Korea episode is great. I’ve watched it a lot of times. He taped it in March of last year. There’s a post last year where I found out I missed him.

I love “No Reservations.” Not only does it feature real, genuine local food, but Tony’s a great break from typical cheery TV hosts. The Korea episode is my favorite; the food looks ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS, and his interactions with his Korean friend that day are hilarious. I very rarely get a chance to eat Korean food but have always wanted to, and that episode raised this desire to an unheard-of level. The Asia Special (Japan and China) is a favorite as well.

That’s great to hear! Korean food, like so many aspects of Korea, is full of extremes. It can be exotic and familiar, stimulating and comforting, boiling hot and ice cold.
