Suggested Items: The “Amazing” Fish, BulGalbi and Grilled Mushroom Salad, Million Won Samgyeopsal

Star chef is a chef-run bistro near Yangjae that specializes in updated Korean and pan-Asian cuisine.  Chef-owner Hu-nam Kim prepares dishes with heavy Korean, Southeast Asian, Japanese, Chinese and European influences.  Popular items include the BulGalbi and Grilled Mushroom Salad (organic greens from Chef Kim’s farm topped with chunks of barbecued beef), Million Won Samgyeopsal (braised pork belly in a rich Korean-style sauce with aged kimchi and cilantro), and the “Amazing” Fish (whole fried fish of your choice, deboned tableside, with a soy-based sauce and cilantro-gari salad).  The menu is not cheap eats, but it won’t break the break, especially if you bring friends.  It is popular with the young affluent crowd and has gotten busy in recent months.  Call for reservations.

I tried to find this place last weekend, but the only restaurant that was at that location was a Chinese place that’s definitely not Star Kitchen. Did I miss it somehow?

Maebong Station, exit 4. Then left, right, left. You turn the final left at Cafe ComeOn. It’s across from a fish restaurant and has a small sign, by Korean standards.

I wish you luck in finding it. You’re not the first person to get lost.

All the dishes are between 12,000 to a little over 30,000 won. All a la carte. EJ and I usually spend 50,000 won there.
