This was Anyang’s best kept secret until recently. Now it looks like people are flocking here. Fortunately, it hasn’t diminished the quality of its dishes, even with its recent expansion. San Ma-eul is a folksy traditional country restaurant at the foot of Gwanak Mountain that originally catered to hikers. The seating is partially outdoor and indoor. The best times to go are last spring and mid autumn late in the afternoon so you can watch the sunset behind the mountains. The star of the show is the rustic Boribap, which is so filling you’d never realize that it’s practically vegan. For the carnivores, the Chicken Barbecue tastes like bacon. The Pajeon is thick and crispy, loaded with green onion and seafood. Wash it down with bowls of Makkeoli rice beer, and you have yourself a nice afternoon. The menu and even the prices are in Korean, so bring along your hangeul reading skills or just remember what we recommend here. Prices run around 11,000 won per dish. The Boribap is 6,000 won.
